Farmer's Market

It's been unseasonably warm here in the Sacramento Valley. Hubby and I have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather by working outside, cleaning up around the trees, and this morning, we went to the local farmer's market! It runs year round, rain or shine, and has local produce of all sorts. Our favorite apples are from Noble Orchards up in the foothills. We eat about 10 lbs of apples each week. Can you believe that?? They're so yummy.

I can tell the weather is starting to get nicer, because there were pots of flowers, just waiting to go to a new home.

Masa Organics is where we usually get brown rice. I think next time we'll be getting the 25 lb. bag. I like to mix it with barley and keep some made up in the refrigerator to mix in with stir fries, or in my veggie omelets on the weekends.

This year, we discovered pomegranate balsamic vinegar..... Oh, my. It's so good, I think I could just drink this stuff straight. It's made right up the road from us. Who knew??

I look forward to our trips each week. We see lots of colorful people. And baskets. Lots and lots of baskets.

  2. I'm so jealous! Noble Orchards are the last of the Paradise apple orchards. My grandfather had a gold mine in Paradise and bought one city block...it's called the Kuhnen Block...he owned all of the buildings. We used to drive up the Honey Run and across the Honey Run covered bridge to go to the claim...it was next to an old apple orchard...the best apples in the world! And I went to school with the Massa's! They're from the Princeton area...I believe they are cousins to Massa Organics...the grandfather was my principle in school...small world.

    1. What a cool story! We love supporting our local farmers. They each have something important to provide, and we've changed some of our habits to include these. We use local honey, oil, soap, and lots of food now that we didn't years ago. Even though we are just one family, I like to think we make a difference in our part of the world.

  3. Love the baskets-I've never seen that "style" before. In the brief (oh, so very brief) farmers market season here, it's plastic bags for everyone. I hate that.

    1. I just bought another basket at a quilt show I went to. Now I'm up to 2 "Farmer's Market" style basket. I figure it's ok to spend money on baskets when I use them to help the environment. At least that's what I tell myself, because really, I just love them and would probably buy them without going to the farmer's market! I agree with you about the plastic, I don't like them either.

  4. It's wonderful to see people using baskets instead of plastic bags. Long time we have stopped using plastic bags, but the sellers at the vegetable market have to put fruit and vegetables into plastic bags! We don't have any farmer's market nearby, wish we had... All apples here are imported... SIGH!

    1. I remember you saying you made a bag just for those baguettes you get at the store. Your bags are as beautiful as baskets! I imagine apples don't grow well where you live. So sad :(

    1. Cool! I'll see you in a few days.... hope you don't mind sleeping on the couch and being woke up with a cold nose saying, "Hi" in the morning. I'll bet you could make your own market with all the stuff you do. I'm in awe at your knowledge!

    1. Thank you! I have a few books on basket making, and even made one. A very simple one, but still! I would love to take a class and learn how to make something as beautiful as a basket. Spring--Wahoo!

    1. Yeah, we've got some great weather. I can't complain at all. Yesterday I popped over to your blog for just a bit. Didn't have more than about 10 minutes, but I liked what I saw! I'll be checking out more later this week!

  9. I am so, so envious of your Farmer's Market. Nothing like that up here near the frozen tundra. There certainly are advantages of living where you do! If Jane can make it to your house in three days, she's driving too fast. All the same, I'll get ready and she can pick me up on the way by.

I remember visiting relatives in California years ago and thinking how easy it would be to be vegetarian or fruitarian (!) in an area like yours where you can grow so many lush, delicious fruits and veggies. Mmmmmm-good!

    1. Yeah, I cracked up when Jane said she'd be here in 3 days! You two can draw straws for who gets the couch, and who gets the air mattress! California is such a beautiful place. I love the weather, and we live outside of a small town perfect for raising kids. I told my hubby not long ago, it wouldn't be too hard for me to be a vegetarian here. Except I'm really liking the fish now. And chicken every few weeks, too. Today, I had fruit for lunch, along with some homemade soft cheese spread on homemade bread with spinach in the middle of it all. It's my new favorite sandwich. True!

    1. You know, I used to only go to the Farmer's Market for fruits, veggies, and the like. Now, I like to go to watch people, and their little kids, and talk to the vendors, and of course to get fruits and veggies.
